Julia Mattner

Senior Botanist

  • BSc (Honours) (Soil Science) 1989 – University of Western Australia
  • PhD (Plant Science) 2002 - University of Western Australia

Julia has over 15 years experience in plant and soil science of the arid zone, particularly in the Pilbara, Murchison, Gascoyne and Carnarvon bioregions, and to a lesser extent in the Southwest of the state. Prior to joining Astron in 2008, she has worked as a botanist with other consultancies, predominantly in the inland Pilbara, as an environmental scientist with the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, and with the Department of Agriculture in Kalgoorlie, Meekatharra and Perth.

During her PhD, which was funded by Anaconda Nickel (now Minara Resources), she concentrated on the conservation biology of endemic plant species in the Northeast Goldfields, focusing on population genetics, phylogenetics, seed biology, plant physiology and rehabilitation. She received a scholarship to conduct part of her research at Kew Gardens in the UK. Subsequently she spent two years at a plant genetics research institute developing a high-throughput method for population genetic studies.

Over the last few years, Julia has conducted threatened flora searches and baseline surveys, compiled Native Vegetation Clearing Permits covering both flora and fauna, conducted desk top reviews and developed research proposals regarding plant genetics and management of weeds. She is experienced in experimental design and analysis. Julia also maintains a strong interest in Aboriginal uses of plants, taxonomy, and in making research relevant to the resources industry.
