Riparian Ecology and Fluvial Geomorphology
Areas of riparian vegetation represent an important and significant ecosystem within the arid northern landscape of Australia. Assessment of the potential impacts of pastoral and infrastructure developments within such areas requires a sound understanding of the complex and dynamic interaction that exists between riparian vegetation and fluvial process. Alterations to the rates and levels of flow within fluvial areas have the potential to impact on vegetation condition, which in turn can influence site stability and rates of erosion.
Astron has considerable expertise in conducting ecological and geomorphological assessments and investigations in the rivers and wetlands of the north-west region of Western Australia. This extends to a comprehensive understanding of the stochastic nature of flow events in northern Australian rivers as well as a strong field-based knowledge of naturally occurring variations in riparian ecology, condition and health over time.
Key areas of expertise include:
- Surveys and assessments of riparian vegetation
- Geomorphological investigations of wetlands and waterways
- Investigations into ecological water requirements and environmental flows
- Waterway management and condition assessment
