Mangrove Ecology

| Case Study 1 | Mangrove Health Condition Assessment Monitoring |
|---|---|
| Client | Apache Energy Limited |
| Location | Lowendal Island Group - NorthWest Shelf |
Description
Astron has been undertaking health condition assessment monitoring of the Lowendal Island Mangroves since 1999. The current program is focused on making a comparative assessment between the health of the mangrove populations on Varanus Island with control populations on nearby undisturbed Bridled Island. A number of quantitative and qualitative measures of mangrove health are collected from populations on each island, with spatial and temporal comparisons being made through multivariate analysis of quantitative data. Detailed canopy density assessments and analyses are also undertaken.
| Case Study 2 | Mardie Station Mangrove Community Mapping and Rehabilitation |
|---|---|
| Client | Apache Energy Limited |
| Location | Mardie Station - West Pilbara |
Description
Astron was responsible for undertaking detailed community mapping, conservation significance and condition assessment of coastal arid mangrove communities as a result of Apache's pipeline shorecrossing construction on Mardie Station in the West Pilbara. Astron also designed and implemented a site stabilisation and mangrove rehabilitation programme aimed at mitigating tidal flow damage whilst also promoting seed capture, natural recruitment and vegetative reproduction.
| Case Study 3 | King Bay Mangrove Community Mapping, Rehabilitation and Monitoring |
|---|---|
| Client | Mermaid Marine Australia Ltd |
| Location | King Bay - Burrup Peninsula |
Description
Astron was responsible for undertaking detailed community mapping, conservation significance and condition assessment of the King Bay mangroves as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment for Mermaid Marine's wharf and slipway development on the Burrup Peninsula. Astron also designed and implemented an extensive mangrove rehabilitation programme for previously cleared areas of King Bay as an offset for those areas disturbed during the wharf and slipway development. This programme included ongoing monitoring and statistical analysis of mangrove community rehabilitation success.
