In 2011 the Department of Water (DoW) issued a request for tender to undertake a Hydrogeological Survey of the North Perth Basin. The objective of the study was to gather the hydrogeochemical information needed to identify the likely physical and geochemical processes occurring within the superficial aquifer as well as to assess groundwater levels and flow.
Astron was engaged by the DoW to complete the survey of 227 bores located within the North Perth Basin. This involved the sampling and analysis of groundwater from the shallow monitoring bores of the superficial aquifer on a basin-wide scale to provide baseline hydrogeochemical data. This data was required to improve the understanding of changes in groundwater quality due to variations in climate, land use and groundwater abstraction.
The groundwater measurements and chemical analysis were used to prepare hydrogeological maps and diagrams that show the spatial and stratigraphical distribution of the water table and the hydrogeochemical characteristics in the North Perth Basin Superficial Aquifer.
