In 2015, Astron commenced mapping and subsequent treatment of all known priority weed species located across a complex integrated system of 14 inland mining operations and associated rail and non-process infrastructure in the Pilbara. Weed mapping and control was implemented by incorporating an 8:6 roster to fit in with site supervisor schedules, and effectively assist the client with project management requirements.
Whilst on site, Astron technicians undertook weed control utilising an industry leading vehicle mounted Quickspray unit, which enables efficient and safe application of herbicide to area’s requiring control. In addition to control works, technicians utilised Aston’s unique method of digitally capturing geo-referenced weed points, report boundaries and control track log data in accordance with the clients data standards. Capturing this data allows for tracking of weed control effort and efficacy.
At the conclusion of each field visit a short report summarising weeds controlled, recommendations for future control programs and weed distribution maps were provided to site supervisors. Astron implemented improvements to this program in the first year of operations by recommending and utilising alternative herbicides enabling selective residual control of weeds in various disturbed and sensitive environments.
